Are you expecting your first child? Trying to figure out what your newborn will look like can be stressful! By a few weeks after birth, you can usually tell that the new baby shares several features from both parents. If you’re thinking about paternity DNA testing, Endeavor DNA can help. Whether your child looks like either parent or not, we can give you peace of mind!
Genetics
Genetics is the basis for what your child will look like. When conceived, one set of DNA from each parent combines to form the primary features. Certain genes can overpower other traits and reduce them. There are a lot of different possibilities! While scientists understand how these genes work, what genes your child will inherit are a total surprise! Now, let’s take a look at a few things you may be able to predict.
Hair Color
Hair color is not determined by a single gene. Rather, several genes work together to determine hair color. Your genes regulate what are known as melanocytes. These cells are what determine what color will grow. Plus, a baby’s hair color is not set in stone. During puberty, hair color can change due to the increase in hormones.
Eye Color
Many children are born with blue or grayish eyes. It could take up to six months for eye color to stabilize. Why? Well, the pigment-producing cells need light to develop with exposure to light. You can usually guess what type of eye color your child will have:
- Do both parents have blue eyes? The child is also very likely to have blue.
- Do both parents have brown eyes? The child is also very likely to have brown.
- If one parent has brown eyes, and the other has blue eyes, it is a 50/50 chance that the child will have brown eyes.
Of course, this all depends on dominant and recessive genes that each parent has. But if one thing is certain, two parents with brown eyes cannot have a child with blue colored eyes.
